Breast Augmentation: Saline vs Silicone
- Posted on: Feb 1 2013
Women can get breast implants to make their breasts bigger and fuller. This procedure is called breast augmentation. Implants may be used for reconstructive purposes, such as after mastectomy for breast cancer, or for cosmetic reasons, such as the simple desire for larger breasts.
Breasts continue to develop until a woman reaches her late teens or early 20s. As such, the FDA requires that women who get saline-filled breast augmentation be at least 18 years old and at least 22 years old for silicone implants.
There are two kinds of breast implants: saline and silicone. Saline-filled implants are filled with sterile salt water (saline) encased in silicone shells. Silicone-filled implants are filled with a plastic gel (silicone) encased in silicone shells. Women who choose saline over silicone are usually afraid of rupture, leakage and/or the silicone entering their bloodstream. The fact is, after your body heals from a breast augmentation surgery, it will form a wall around the implant. This walled off area encases the implant and if the implant were ever to rupture, the silicone gel will just stay in this walled off area until the ruptured implant is removed. The silicone will not enter your bloodstream. If a saline implant ruptures, your body will just absorb all the saline in the implant and you will be left with a deflated breast until you return to your surgeon to get a replacement.
The FDA have approved three companies to manufacture and sell breast implants in America. The only approved implants in this country are made by Allergan, Sientra and Mentor. Sientra implants are the newest to the market, receiving approval in 2012 for their “gummy bear” implants that retain their shape due to a special chemical make-up of their silicone gel. Sientra’s new “gummy bear” implant that will ease your worries of rupturing further. Even when cut in half, the silicone gel of a Sientra implant will not leak out. It just retains its size and shape, making silicone gel implants exceedingly safe and the more natural-looking choice.
