Reconstruction of the breast after a mastectomy due to cancer or other disease is quite possible with today’s surgical procedures. The procedure is often covered by many HMOs after breast cancer surgery and legislation is currently before Congress to enact mandatory coverage. Using the newest medical techniques, a plastic surgeon is often able to create a breast that is similar in form and appearance to that of the natural breast. A consultation will provide you with information on the many available options for post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.
Breast reconstruction is usually achieved through multiple plastic surgery techniques and procedures in an attempt to restore a breast to its normal and natural shape, appearance and size following a mastectomy. Results are highly variable depending on each individual patient – this includes where incision lines are located, scar size, the sensation of your breasts, procedures needed and the implants or donor sites used.
Dr. Monasebian will work with you to individualize your treatment plan. Procedures for a breast reconstruction may need to be performed in a New York City hospital as well as in our office-based surgical facility in the Upper East Side. Multiple steps may be necessary to full breast reconstruction after the initial mastectomy, such as a flap technique that takes tissue from another area in the body to make a breast mound, tissue expanders to stretch healthy skin to accomadate a breast implant, breast augmentation procedure, nipple creation and areola tattooing.
